Attiko Alsos & Tourkovounia: Athens’ Best-Kept View

4 min read

Athens is famous for the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill, yet some of its most remarkable views remain largely unknown to visitors. Rising above the neighbourhoods of Kypseli, Galatsi and Psychiko, the Tourkovounia hills form one of the highest and most extensive natural elevations within the Athenian urban landscape. On their southern side lies Attiko Alsos, a large green space where sport, culture and local life come together. This is not a polished tourist attraction. It is an authentic Athenian escape—one discovered through a little walking, curiosity and local knowledge.

A Park Made for Movement

Attiko Alsos offers welcome space for running, walking and exercising away from the traffic below. Its facilities include outdoor courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis, as well as playgrounds, open spaces for ball games and places to pause beneath the trees.

Families come here to play, friends meet for sport, runners follow the park’s paths and others simply find a quiet spot to enjoy the sky. A small refreshment point and nearby cafés make it possible to spend several relaxed hours in the area.

A Place Shared Across Generations

My connection with Attiko Alsos began when I was a child. My father would bring me here to walk and play, creating the kind of simple childhood memories that remain vivid many years later.

Today, I have returned with my own daughters. Watching them play in a place I once explored with their grandfather gives the park a completely different meaning for me. It is no longer only part of my childhood; it has become a place where one generation quietly meets the next.

This is one of the reasons I wanted to share Attiko Alsos with Ivélia’s guests. It is not simply a green space on a map, but part of the everyday Athens in which local families grow up.

Summer Evenings at the Theatre

Within the park stands the open-air Katina Paxinou Theatre, named after one of Greece’s most celebrated actresses.

During the summer, the theatre hosts performances, concerts and cultural festivals beneath the night sky. Its setting among the trees creates an atmosphere very different from that of a conventional indoor theatre.

Visitors should check the current programme published by the Region of Attica, as events and admission arrangements change each season.

Yades and an Athens Sunset

Close to the park, Yades has long been known as a café and meeting point with an elevated view over Athens. The surrounding area is especially beautiful in the late afternoon, when the light softens and the city begins to glow.

It is an ideal place to pause after a walk, enjoy a drink and watch the sunset—without the crowds usually found at the city’s more famous viewpoints.

“Koukos”: A Secret Known to Locals

Higher among the Tourkovounia hills is a viewpoint locally known as “Koukos”. It is one of those places that rarely appears in conventional tourist guides.

From its elevated position, Athens seems to unfold in every direction: the Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill, the urban basin and, in the distance, Piraeus and the sea.

However, Koukos is not a formally organised tourist viewpoint. Some paths may be steep, uneven or poorly marked. Visitors should go only during daylight, wear suitable shoes, carry water and avoid isolated sections or rocky edges without someone who knows the area.

Its beauty lies precisely in its local, undiscovered character—but it should be approached with care

Getting There from Ivélia

Bus 224, travelling towards Eleftheriou Venizelou, passes close to Ivélia through the Pedion tou Areos and Panellinios area before continuing towards Tourkovounia.

The most convenient stop can vary according to the intended entrance and temporary route changes. Visitors should check the official OASA telematics application on the day of travel and ask the driver for the best stop for Attiko Alsos or Yades. From the upper stops, allow approximately 10–15 minutes of uphill walking.

A taxi is the simplest option, especially for families with young children or anyone planning to return after sunset.

A Different Perspective on Athens

Attiko Alsos and Tourkovounia are not essential because they appear on every Athens checklist. They are special precisely because they do not.

They offer space to run, play, watch a performance and see Athens from a viewpoint shared mostly by the people who live here. For me, they also hold something more personal: memories of my father, my childhood and now my daughters discovering the same landscape for themselves.

That is the Athens I most want Ivélia’s guests to experience—not only the city of monuments, but the city of everyday life, family memories and hidden views.
